Urgent action required as Walsall Council propose land use changes to allow housing to be built on green belt in Walsall

In the last few days we are disappointed to have discovered that without our knowledge, Walsall Council has been consulting with residents about their new Site Allocations Document (SAD).

This document sets out future proposals for the use of residential, commercial, agricultural and recreational land in the borough of Walsall. Including the future of Great Barr Hall Estate and the former St Margaret’s Hospital site, referred to in the SAD as EN7.

We believe that Walsall Council’s proposed policy changes paves the way for approval of the current planning application (which may be determined this summer). These changes now focus on allowing for enabling development (the building of houses) to take place on the Green Belt to secure/fund the future restoration of Great Barr Hall. The emphasis on the protection of the listed parkland (the Green Belt) in this document has now become secondary to the Hall’s restoration.

If you want to protect the green belt we need your help…

  • You can view the SAD here: http://bit.ly/1VIFmAi
  • Send your objection to: planningpolicy@walsall.gov.uk
  • Make clear that in your opinion: ‘EN7 fails to give equal or more value to the historical listed parkland by allowing its destruction with an enabling development to fund the rebuilding of Great Barr Hall. The destruction of the parkland will result in huge historical and environmental loss to the local area. It also fails to identify and protect the green belts prime agricultural land.’

Walsall Council’s consultation ends on Tuesday 3 May 2016. Please get your comments in no later than Friday 29 April.

We are still working on further objections to the planing application and will be updating our website on how to respond soon.
